Hardware products like for example nails, screws and bolts are more and more often filled in packages that are adjusted to meet the needs of each user group. The packagings are typically divided into three groups:

1) To private customers on the do-it-yourself market. Small packages: 100 g –1 kg.
2) To craftsmen. Mainly middle-sized packages: 1-5 kg.
3) To industrial customers. Usually large packages: 10-15 kg

The dilemma
It is difficult for the supplier/wholesaler to know beforehand in which packaging type the goods are sold. Since the time of delivery and the price are generally the most important parameters, they can choose between two alternatives.

1) The same product is stocked in several different packages, which results in heavy storage expenses and use
of storage space.
2) The products are stocked in bulk containers. They will not be packed until an order has been received. Thus,
suppliers/wholesalers can save on storage expenses and storage space.

Most suppliers/wholesalers prefer the latter. This solution, however, requires high-speed packaging equipment suitable for frequent batch changes. These very requirements have caused more suppliers/wholesalers to use multihead weighers in their packaging lines instead of the traditional linear weighers.

Advantages of the multihead weigher
High accuracy: The product is never produced in too large or too small quantities.
Flexibility: A wide variety of products can be packed due to extremely quick change-over times.
Automated process: Very little manpower is required to pack a very large range of products.
High capacity: Short time of delivery without any pre-packed products in stock.

Long ago, the multihead weigher was introduced into other industries. However, also in the fastener industry, the suppliers are realising that their costs are reduced the most by using multihead weighers.

But due to the price the fastener industry has hesitated to buy a the multihead weigher. Only companies with relatively high output have been able to justify the extra cost.

Price competitive multihead weigher
This has now changed. With the new BILWINCO BW007 multihead weigher the fastener producer can get a multihed weigher for the price of a linear, i.e he will get all the advantages of a multihead weigher without paying more.
